Rock Climbing Courses

The following courses are run in the UK peak district, making use of the multitude of excellent accessible crags and gritstone edges in the area. Courses can also be run in any of the English or Welsh mountainous areas if booking as a group.

Introduction to Climbing

If you've always wanted to give rock climbing a go, or are looking for an exciting way to fill your weekend, then this taster session is a great way to pick up the basics. Accompanied by an experienced, qualified instructor, you will head to a crag local to you where we will provide you with all the equipment you need and full safety instruction. Then it's up to you to climb as high as you like, and take your turn learning to belay (that is, keeping your partner safe whilst they climb). By the end of the session, you will know why we love to climb, learnt a little, and (hopefully) whet your appetite to climb more, higher, and harder!

Abseiling Skills

Abseiling is a fundamental skill for anyone venturing into the mountains. It can get you out of some tricky situations and be a lot of fun, but it does require prior instruction. If you're interested in learning conventional and improvised abseiling techniques, safety methods and precautions, and ways of making sure abseiling stays in its place as a solution to problems, this course is ideal for you. We aim to keep the course practical and enjoyable, but learning abseiling techniques before you ever need them will set your mind at ease, and will speed your safe progression back down your first big routes or mountains. This one day course is ideal for those looking for either formal abseiling instruction, or simply those who enjoy the mountains and want to try something new.

SPA Rock Climbing Instructors

Will Sheaff heads up the courses above and is available to offer climbing instruction around the Peak and the north of England. SPA (Single Pitch Award) is a nationally recognised qualification that gives you the reassurance that your instructor is safe and competent. If you are organising an event or weekend away for friends or colleagues, we can provide staff to offer the benefits of instruction and keeping you safe on the crag.

Learning to Lead Courses

If you're looking to make the transition from indoor to outdoor rock climbing, our learning to lead course is for you. Our experienced instructors will spend either one or two days with you, covering selection of safe anchors, setting up top ropes and learning to lead. Come along with your climbing partner, and learn the skills needed to start venturing outside in safety. A competent second will get the most from this course, but the emphasis is on teaching you the most relevant and useful topics to help you get the most out of your climbing, whatever your current level of experience. Please note for this course, there is a maximum group size of two people, and the "group booking" cost always applies.
